The primary function of these components is to allow a degree of equilibration between atmospheric conditions and the interior of an enclosure without compromising the waterproof character of the enclosure.

The sensor cases are marketed for use with soil moisture sensors and both items are available from AliExpress (air vent, sensor shell) and other on-line stores.

To save space inside my enclosures, rather than drilling a 12mm hole and securing the air vent or sensor case with the nut provided, I drilled a slightly smaller hole (ideally 10.7mm or 27/64") and tapped an M12 (1.5 pitch) thread directly into the enclosure. Because the enclosure is just plastic, this can be easily done with an M12 (1.5 pitch) bolt—there's no need to go out and buy an M12 (1.5 pitch) thread tap, although this does make the job a lot easier. I then cut the threaded section on the vent or sensor case back so that it did not protrude into the enclosure when fully seated.
